Many of today’s young people can feel cheated on the security that the older generation earned in the labor market. Now it is job without payment, insecurity and poor working environment that applies.
Sanna has worked at McDonalds for three years. Although she only had a part-time job the employer required that she was always available and willing to jump in for the extra work, often without compensation.
–We had to work without payment, says Sanna, and go and work on our free time to be at meetings and repaint the office and so. I was asked to sleep with the cell phone under the pillow so that I could quickly be at the restaurant if I was needed.
Systematic freework and harassment of employees have been established at common workplaces as grocery stores and restaurants. At workplaces where young people get jobs in the growing service sector, have completely different conditions than other jobs.
Here part-time work dominate and certain period of employment and job security is practically abolished – What I remember most strongly, says Sanna, all the times we are told to bully people out, to freeze people out to get them to resign, because they are not good enough.
– If you are starting to speak up, says Sara, who worked on Jensens Bofhus, you become hateobject at work. The manager would take revange in any way possible.
– They have put it in the system, says Svante Ahlman, who served as deputy store manager at Lidl. They run the crap out of people, because there is always someone else to bring in.
According to economist Per Skedinger is the emergence of parallel labor markets as we now see, where politicians have chosen to let the young people and immigrants bear the insecurity and take the knocks in the form of unemployment and precarious forms of employment.
– Ultimately, it is a distribution issue, said Per Skedinger, which shall stand for this flexibility. And it may be that those who suffer, is a politically weaker group, when it comes to influence. Over the past twenty years, the vast majority of Swedes got better, higher living standards, higher incomes and better health. Meanwhile, young people have gotten worse.
Professor Joakim Vogel, who for forty years studying Swedes living standards, says that this trend has been well known for a long time, and that no one has bothered.
– Generation Inequality is the new inequality.
