Boliden is sued for 90 million kronor for the damage that their waste has caused in Chile. An important factor behind the lawsuit is Laikas documentary “Blybarnen” from 2009 according to the renowned American environmental lawyer Lewis Gordon, who took the initiative to the recordlawsuit.
– The film has been invaluable to us. It gives a feeling for the case that you would otherwise only get by yourself by travel to the affected area. It introduces the viewer to the different parts, to the landscape and to the victims. It contains information about important documents and events, possible witnesses and experts.
Lewis Gordon is one of America’s most distinguished environmental lawyers. He has driven the lawsuit against the oil company Exxon after the extensive oil spill from the Exxon Valdez outside of Alaska in 1989. He currently leads the internationally oriented Environment Defenders Law Center.
Blybarnen was directed by Lars Edman and William Johansson and was shown on SVT in October 2009. It has received awards at several international festivals, including the French Film Festival FIGRAs great prize.
Lewis Gordon saw the movie the first time in 2010.
– I don’t know of any other film that has been so important in our decision to look at a case. I’ve seen it at least seven times and each time I discover something new.
